The Hunt for Skywalker

Three years had passed since the destruction of the Death Star. The Rebel Alliance had abandoned Yavin 4 and established a new hidden base on the frozen world of Hoth. Across the galaxy, Darth Vader continued his pursuit of Luke Skywalker, convinced the young pilot held importance beyond the rebellion. Thousands of probe droids were dispatched, scouring system after system until one landed on Hoth, recording signs of activity.

Luke Skywalker, patrolling on a tauntaun, investigated what appeared to be a fallen meteor. Instead, he encountered the droid, though he did not realize its true purpose. Before he could return, he was attacked and dragged away by a wampa. As Luke failed to return, Han Solo set out on his own tauntaun to find him before nightfall.

Capture and Survival

Luke awoke suspended in a cave, his tauntaun being consumed by the wampa. Through the Force, he summoned his lightsaber, cut himself free, and severed the beast’s arm before escaping into the storm. Exhausted and freezing, he collapsed in the snow. In the haze of unconsciousness, the spirit of Obi-Wan Kenobi appeared, directing him to the world of Dagobah and to seek Yoda, last of the Jedi Masters.

Han located his friend and sheltered him inside the body of his fallen tauntaun to survive the cold. He worked through the night to construct shelter. By dawn, snowspeeders from Echo Base found them and brought them back. Luke was healed in a bacta tank and soon recovered.

Echo Base in Peril

Leia Organa urged Han to remain with the rebellion, though their heated exchanges concealed unspoken affection. Meanwhile, the probe droid transmitted evidence of the base before destroying itself under fire from Han and Chewbacca. The signal was received aboard the Executor, Vader’s massive flagship. Admiral Ozzel dismissed the finding as insignificant, but Vader recognized the truth. Orders were given to set a course for Hoth.

General Rieekan of the Rebels ordered evacuation procedures. Supplies and equipment were loaded aboard transports while soldiers prepared for defense. As the Imperial fleet emerged from hyperspace, Ozzel’s tactical blunder revealed their presence too close to the planet. Vader executed him by Force choke during a transmission and promoted Captain Piett in his place. Ground forces were dispatched, led by General Veers, to march overland and disable the shield protecting Echo Base.

The Battle of Hoth

Snow blanketed the field as Imperial AT-AT walkers advanced toward the Rebel defenses. Energy shields prevented bombardment from orbit, forcing the Empire into a ground assault. Rebel pilots launched in snowspeeders, armed with harpoons and tow cables to counter the heavily armored machines. Luke commanded Rogue Squadron, but his gunner Dak Ralter was killed in the first exchange. Wedge Antilles successfully entangled the legs of one walker, toppling it into the snow.

Luke’s craft was struck down, but he survived, climbing atop another AT-AT and using his lightsaber to breach its armor. A thermal detonator destroyed the vehicle from within. Despite acts of defiance, Imperial might overwhelmed the defenses. General Veers’s walker reached the power generator and destroyed it, crippling the base.

Inside, stormtroopers breached the halls. Han and Leia fled with Chewbacca and C-3PO, escaping through corridors filled with blaster fire. Luke, reunited with R2-D2, departed in his X-wing, following Obi-Wan’s instructions to travel to Dagobah. The Millennium Falcon carried Han and Leia away as Vader himself arrived on the planet.

Flight and Pursuit

The Falcon was pursued by Imperial TIE fighters. When Han attempted to jump to hyperspace, the hyperdrive failed. With options limited, he maneuvered through an asteroid field, evading pursuers and hiding inside what appeared to be a cavern within a massive asteroid. As repairs were attempted, Han and Leia’s growing bond became evident, sealed by a kiss before they were interrupted.

The cavern proved to be the interior of a giant space slug, forcing a frantic escape. Meanwhile, Vader received a message from the Emperor, Darth Sidious, warning that Luke Skywalker posed a threat. Together, they agreed that Luke should be turned to the dark side or destroyed. Vader also summoned a group of bounty hunters, including Boba Fett, to track the Falcon.

To avoid detection, Han attached the Falcon to the hull of a Star Destroyer. When the fleet discarded its refuse, the Falcon drifted away unnoticed, but Fett’s ship, Slave I, followed in secret.

Training on Dagobah

Luke’s X-wing sank into the swamps of Dagobah upon arrival. There, he encountered a small, strange being who revealed himself as Yoda. Though skeptical of Luke’s readiness, Yoda was persuaded by Obi-Wan’s spirit to begin training. Under Yoda’s guidance, Luke learned discipline, combat, and the dangers of the dark side.

One test led him into a cave strong with dark energy. Ignoring Yoda’s advice, Luke entered armed. In a vision, he fought and decapitated a figure resembling Vader, only to see his own face beneath the mask. The warning was clear—if he gave in to fear and anger, he risked the same fate.

Luke struggled with control. When Yoda lifted Luke’s sunken X-wing from the swamp through the Force, Luke’s disbelief revealed his doubts. Lessons continued, but visions of his friends in pain disturbed him. Ignoring Yoda’s cautions, he resolved to leave before completing his training.

Cloud City Betrayal

Han guided the Falcon to Cloud City on Bespin, governed by his old ally Lando Calrissian. Though welcomed, the group grew suspicious after C-3PO went missing and was found dismantled. Unknown to them, Lando had been forced into a bargain with Vader, who sought to capture Luke. Han, Leia, Chewbacca, and C-3PO were taken prisoner and subjected to torment designed to lure Luke.

Vader decided to test carbon-freezing technology on Han before attempting it on Luke. Before being lowered into the chamber, Han and Leia exchanged a final confession of love. Han was frozen in carbonite and handed to Boba Fett, who planned to deliver him to Jabba the Hutt. Vader reneged on promises made to Lando, ordering the others taken to his flagship. Outraged, Lando plotted their escape.

The Duel on Cloud City

Luke arrived at Bespin against Yoda’s and Obi-Wan’s counsel. He pursued his friends but was led into a trap within the carbon-freezing chamber. Vader confronted him, and their lightsabers clashed in a brutal duel. Vader’s mastery overwhelmed Luke’s inexperience. The battle spanned corridors, machinery, and walkways, with Vader using the Force to hurl objects at his opponent.

Meanwhile, Lando turned on the Empire, freeing Leia, Chewbacca, and the repaired C-3PO. They attempted to rescue Han but were too late; Slave I departed with its frozen cargo. Pursued by stormtroopers, they fled toward the Millennium Falcon.

On the platforms of Cloud City, the duel reached its climax. Vader severed Luke’s hand, sending his lightsaber tumbling into the depths. Cornered and beaten, Luke refused to surrender. Vader then revealed the truth—he was Luke’s father. The revelation shattered Luke, who rejected the offer to rule together. Instead, he chose to fall into the abyss.

Rescue and Escape

Luke clung to an antenna beneath the city, broadcasting a desperate call through the Force. Leia sensed him and urged Chewbacca to turn back. With Lando’s aid, they retrieved Luke aboard the Falcon and attempted to flee. Once again the hyperdrive failed, sabotage ensuring Imperial pursuit. At the last moment, R2-D2 restored the system, propelling the Falcon to safety in hyperspace.

Vader, watching its escape, withdrew in silence to his chambers, his failure evident. Luke, aboard a medical frigate, was fitted with a prosthetic hand. Leia stood at his side, while Lando and Chewbacca departed to search for Han. Though separated and scarred, the rebels prepared for the battles yet to come, their resolve unbroken.
