The Shattered Galaxy

Nineteen years had passed since the proclamation of the Galactic Empire, and the galaxy was divided. Civil war consumed systems both near and distant, as the Rebel Alliance emerged to challenge Imperial authority. Their first significant triumph was achieved when secret plans for the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the Death Star, were stolen. The weapon, a moon-sized battle station capable of annihilating entire planets, represented the peak of Imperial dominance. It was believed that the plans, if analyzed properly, could expose a weakness and deliver hope to oppressed worlds.

Princess Leia Organa, a leading figure within the rebellion and custodian of the stolen data, attempted to deliver the plans to Alderaan. Her ship, the Tantive IV, carried both the data and a desperate plea for aid. However, Imperial forces intercepted the vessel above Tatooine. The Devastator, an Imperial Star Destroyer commanded by Darth Vader, pursued and disabled the fleeing corvette, leaving it vulnerable to boarding.

The Fall of the Tantive IV

Imperial stormtroopers boarded the crippled vessel, engaging and killing its defenders. Captain Raymus Antilles resisted but was quickly subdued. Darth Vader, the Emperor’s enforcer, entered amidst smoke and bodies to inspect the outcome. Seeking the stolen plans, he interrogated Antilles personally. The captain refused cooperation and was killed by Vader’s own hand.

During the chaos, Princess Leia concealed herself long enough to record a holographic message. The message, containing both the stolen plans and a call for help, was entrusted to the astromech droid R2-D2. Instructions were given for the data to be delivered to Obi-Wan Kenobi, a former Jedi Knight living in seclusion on Tatooine. The princess was soon discovered, stunned, and taken before Vader. She claimed diplomatic status, insisting her mission was peaceful. Vader dismissed her claims as treason, ordering her imprisonment. To conceal Imperial involvement, a false report was transmitted to the Senate declaring the ship lost with all hands.

Meanwhile, R2-D2 and the protocol droid C-3PO escaped via pod, landing on Tatooine’s desert surface. Imperial gunners, detecting no life signs aboard the pod, allowed it to reach the planet unchallenged.

A Desert Encounter

The two droids, wandering under Tatooine’s twin suns, were captured by Jawa scavengers and transported aboard a massive sandcrawler. Eventually, they were sold to moisture farmer Owen Lars and his nephew, Luke Skywalker. A routine cleaning led Luke to discover part of Leia’s holographic message. The mention of Obi-Wan Kenobi raised questions, as Luke associated the name with the local hermit Ben Kenobi.

During the evening meal, Owen ordered Luke to erase the droid’s memory the following day. He further requested Luke remain on the farm for one more harvest season before pursuing dreams of leaving for the Imperial Academy. That night, R2-D2 departed alone, determined to complete his mission.

Meeting Obi-Wan Kenobi

Luke, accompanied by C-3PO, pursued the runaway droid across the desert. Attacked by Tusken Raiders, they were rescued by Ben Kenobi, who revealed his true identity as Obi-Wan. At his dwelling, Obi-Wan activated Leia’s full message, in which she pleaded for aid against the Empire. He presented Luke with his father’s lightsaber, explaining that Luke’s father had been a Jedi Knight betrayed and murdered by Darth Vader, once Obi-Wan’s own apprentice.

Obi-Wan urged Luke to accompany him to Alderaan. Luke initially refused but agreed to transport him as far as Anchorhead.

Tragedy on the Homestead

Imperial stormtroopers, searching for the stolen droids, traced them to the Jawas. Their sandcrawler was found destroyed, evidence of precise military action. Realizing the danger, Luke returned home only to find his aunt and uncle killed and the homestead burned. With no remaining ties to Tatooine, Luke resolved to follow Obi-Wan and deliver the plans.

Passage to Alderaan

In Mos Eisley, the group sought transportation off-world. Imperial patrols were evaded through Obi-Wan’s use of a Jedi mind trick. Within the cantina, arrangements were made with smuggler Han Solo and his co-pilot Chewbacca. Passage aboard the Millennium Falcon was secured for a fee, though Solo simultaneously dealt with threats from bounty hunter Greedo and crime lord Jabba the Hutt. Greedo was killed during a confrontation, while Jabba received assurances of future repayment.

As stormtroopers closed in, the Falcon launched under fire, escaping Tatooine’s orbit and jumping to hyperspace toward Alderaan.

Imperial Power and Fear

Aboard the Death Star, Imperial officers debated the rebellion’s growing influence. Admiral Motti expressed faith in the battle station’s power, while General Tagge warned of vulnerability. Grand Moff Tarkin ended the discussion by announcing the Emperor had dissolved the Imperial Senate, leaving regional governors to control star systems through fear alone.

When Motti dismissed the Force as irrelevant, Darth Vader used it to choke him from across the chamber, releasing him only at Tarkin’s order.

Destruction of Alderaan

Leia, imprisoned aboard the Death Star, resisted interrogation. Tarkin threatened Alderaan’s destruction unless the rebel base location was revealed. She provided Dantooine as the location, but Tarkin ordered Alderaan’s annihilation regardless. Before her eyes, the Death Star’s superlaser fired, erasing the planet and its population in a single blast.

Arrival at the Death Star

The Millennium Falcon exited hyperspace expecting Alderaan but found only an asteroid field. A pursuing TIE fighter lured them toward the Death Star, which captured the Falcon with its tractor beam. The crew concealed themselves in smuggling compartments while stormtroopers boarded for inspection.

Learning Leia was aboard and condemned to death, Luke persuaded Han and Chewbacca to attempt a rescue by promising reward money. Disguised as stormtroopers, they infiltrated the detention block while Obi-Wan departed to disable the tractor beam.

Leia was freed, but the group’s escape route led into a garbage compactor where a resident creature attacked before retreating. As the walls closed in, communication with C-3PO enabled R2-D2 to halt the mechanism, saving them from being crushed.

Duel of Fates

As the others sought the Falcon, Obi-Wan confronted Darth Vader. Their lightsaber duel ended when Obi-Wan, glancing toward Luke, lowered his guard and was struck down. His body vanished, becoming one with the Force. The others escaped aboard the Falcon as TIE fighters pursued. Despite losses among the attackers, Leia suspected the escape had been allowed so the Empire could track them.

The Battle of Yavin

At the rebel base on Yavin 4, analysis of the Death Star plans revealed a single weakness: a thermal exhaust port leading to the main reactor. A direct hit with proton torpedoes would trigger a chain reaction capable of destroying the station. Preparations began for a desperate assault.

Han Solo, after receiving his payment, departed to settle debts, declining involvement in the coming battle. Rebel pilots, including Luke, launched in X-wing and Y-wing starfighters as the Death Star approached range of the base.

Imperial forces, led by Vader in his TIE Advanced fighter, inflicted heavy losses. Luke began his attack run as the station prepared to fire on Yavin 4. At the last moment, Han returned in the Falcon, clearing Vader’s pursuit. Guided by Obi-Wan’s disembodied voice, Luke fired two proton torpedoes into the exhaust port. The resulting chain reaction destroyed the Death Star completely, killing Tarkin and the station’s crew. Vader escaped in his damaged fighter.

A New Hope

The surviving pilots returned to Yavin 4. In a ceremony before assembled rebels, Princess Leia awarded medals to Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. The destruction of the Death Star marked the rebellion’s greatest victory to date, proving the Empire was not invincible and inspiring resistance across the galaxy.
