Ambassadors in Secret

Thirty-two years before the Battle of Yavin, the Galactic Republic faced growing turmoil. The Trade Federation had imposed a blockade on the Mid Rim world of Naboo, claiming control of its trade routes. In secret, Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum dispatched Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, as ambassadors to negotiate peace aboard the Federation flagship.

Unbeknownst to them, the Federation was acting under the influence of Darth Sidious, a Sith Lord working from the shadows. Sidious ordered Viceroy Nute Gunray to proceed with invasion plans and eliminate the Jedi. Though Gunray expressed doubts about the legality of such actions, Sidious assured him that everything would be taken care of politically.

Once the Jedi arrived, they were trapped in a conference room filled with poisonous dioxis gas while their ship, the Radiant VII, was targeted for destruction. Surviving the attempt, the Jedi fought through squads of battle droids and reached the command deck. They were met with heavy resistance from Droidekas—Destroyer Droids—forcing them to withdraw. The Jedi escaped aboard separate landing craft bound for Naboo’s surface.

Naboo in Peril

On Naboo, Queen Padmé Amidala contacted Gunray to challenge the legality of the blockade. He denied the existence of any ambassadors, deepening her suspicion. Gunray cut communications, disabling planetary transmissions to prepare for invasion.

Meanwhile, Amidala spoke via hologram to Senator Sheev Palpatine, who expressed surprise that the ambassadors had not arrived. Governor Sio Bibble warned that the disruption of communication was a sure sign that invasion was imminent.

The Trade Federation proceeded to occupy Theed, Naboo’s capital, capturing the queen and her advisors.

The Outcast and the Jedi

During the invasion, Qui-Gon saved a clumsy Gungan outcast, Jar Jar Binks, from being crushed by an MTT troop transport. Joined shortly by Obi-Wan, who had been pursued by STAP droids, the Jedi accepted Jar Jar’s guidance. He led them to Otoh Gunga, the underwater Gungan city.

There they appealed to Boss Nass, requesting help against the Federation. The Gungan leader, harboring resentment against the Naboo, refused but permitted the Jedi a transport: a bongo submarine. Joined by Jar Jar, they traveled through Naboo’s core, narrowly surviving attacks by aquatic predators before surfacing in Theed.

The Jedi infiltrated the city, rescuing Amidala and her entourage. Using their lightsabers and the Force, they defeated droid patrols and spirited the queen away. Their plan was to reach Coruscant to plead Naboo’s case before the Galactic Senate.

Escape Through the Blockade

As Amidala’s starship attempted to break the blockade, it sustained heavy fire. Several droids were destroyed while repairing the damage, but one astromech—R2-D2—successfully restored the shields. With R2-D2’s efforts, the ship escaped hyperspace but suffered a damaged hyperdrive. The group was forced to make an emergency landing on the desert world of Tatooine.

The Boy on Tatooine

In Mos Espa, Qui-Gon sought parts from junk dealer Watto, whose Toydarian physiology resisted Jedi mind tricks. Republic credits held no value on Tatooine, leaving them unable to purchase what they needed. It was then that they met Anakin Skywalker, Watto’s young slave.

Anakin displayed remarkable aptitude for mechanics and piloting. He had constructed a protocol droid, C-3PO, from spare parts. Qui-Gon sensed the Force strongly within the boy and suspected he might be the Chosen One of prophecy. A blood test revealed his midi-chlorian count to be extraordinarily high, surpassing even known Jedi.

Qui-Gon wagered with Watto, arranging for Anakin to race in the Boonta Eve Classic podrace. The gamble was risky: if Anakin won, he would earn his freedom and the group would obtain the necessary parts.

The Podrace

The night before the race, Anakin spoke of his dreams to one day free slaves and explore the stars. His mother, Shmi, expressed her faith in his abilities while recognizing the dangers ahead.

During the Boonta Eve race, Anakin faced skilled rivals, including the dangerous Sebulba. Despite sabotage attempts, Anakin’s instincts and reflexes guided him. He repaired his podracer mid-race, avoided crashes, and accelerated past Sebulba in the final lap. Emerging victorious, he secured his freedom, though his mother remained enslaved.

Grateful but saddened by leaving her behind, Anakin joined the Jedi. He bid farewell to Shmi, promising to return one day. As they departed Tatooine, Qui-Gon was ambushed by a black-robed warrior wielding a double-bladed lightsaber. The duel was intense, but Qui-Gon escaped aboard the starship. The attacker was Darth Maul, Sidious’s apprentice.

The Senate on Coruscant

On Coruscant, Amidala presented Naboo’s plight to the Senate. Bureaucratic procedure stalled action, influenced by the Trade Federation’s political reach. Palpatine, sensing opportunity, advised Amidala to call for a Vote of No Confidence in Chancellor Valorum. The queen reluctantly complied, destabilizing the Republic’s leadership. Palpatine positioned himself as a candidate for Supreme Chancellor.

Qui-Gon reported to the Jedi Council, declaring that their attacker was a Sith. The Council, long believing the Sith extinct, was alarmed. Qui-Gon also requested that Anakin be trained as a Jedi, but the Council refused. They judged him too old and fearful, foreseeing danger in his future.

The queen, frustrated by Senate inaction, decided to return to Naboo and reclaim her planet. The Jedi Council instructed Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan to accompany her.

Alliance with the Gungans

Upon returning to Naboo, Amidala sought aid from the Gungans. Jar Jar led them to the Sacred Place, where the Gungan people had retreated. Padmé revealed herself as the true queen, humbling herself before Boss Nass. Her sincerity convinced the Gungans to ally with the Naboo.

A battle plan was devised. The Gungan Grand Army would engage the droid forces as a diversion, while Amidala, her guards, and the Jedi infiltrated Theed to capture Nute Gunray. Simultaneously, starfighter pilots would strike against the blockade.

The Battle of Naboo

The Gungan army deployed shields as Trade Federation tanks advanced. The shields held briefly, but when destroyed, waves of battle droids overwhelmed the army. Jar Jar fought clumsily but played his part. The Gungans suffered heavy losses, but their resistance bought time.

Amidala’s group infiltrated Theed through a hidden route. In the palace, firefights erupted as they sought Gunray. Amidala and her decoys captured the viceroy, forcing him to face accountability.

Above Naboo, Anakin accidentally launched in an N-1 starfighter. Swept into battle, he piloted with instinct, eventually entering the Droid Control Ship. By chance and skill, he fired torpedoes into its core, destroying it and disabling the entire droid army.

Duel of the Fates

Meanwhile, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan encountered Darth Maul. The Sith ignited his double-bladed weapon, initiating one of the fiercest duels in Jedi history. The combat spanned hangars and catwalks, testing the Jedi’s skills.

Separated by energy fields, Obi-Wan watched helplessly as Qui-Gon battled Maul alone. When the fields deactivated, Qui-Gon resumed the fight, but Maul struck him down with a killing blow.

Enraged, Obi-Wan attacked with renewed ferocity. Though Maul disarmed and nearly defeated him, Obi-Wan drew on the Force, leaping from a reactor shaft and summoning Qui-Gon’s lightsaber. With a swift strike, he bisected Maul, casting his remains into the abyss.

The Aftermath

Obi-Wan cradled Qui-Gon in his final moments. Qui-Gon’s dying wish was that Obi-Wan train Anakin, whom he believed was destined to bring balance to the Force. Obi-Wan promised to honor this request.

In the aftermath, the Jedi Council reluctantly allowed Obi-Wan, newly knighted, to take Anakin as his Padawan. Yoda warned of the dangers of training one so old and fearful, but conceded to Qui-Gon’s will.

Chancellor Palpatine congratulated Amidala on her people’s victory. Nute Gunray was taken into custody to face trial, though his connection to the Sith remained concealed

Celebration on Naboo

The people of Naboo and the Gungans celebrated their newfound unity. A grand parade wound through the streets of Theed. Queen Amidala presented a sphere of peace to Boss Nass, symbolizing the alliance of their peoples. Obi-Wan stood as a Jedi Knight beside his new apprentice, Anakin Skywalker.

Far from the celebrations, Yoda and Mace Windu pondered the Sith threat. Since there were always two—a master and an apprentice—they questioned which one had been destroyed. Their doubts foreshadowed the dangers still to come.
