Suicide Squad Plot Summary

A Dangerous Proposal

Superman’s death has left a void in global security, exposing humanity’s vulnerability to metahuman threats that conventional military forces cannot address. Intelligence officer Amanda Waller recognizes this gap and proposes a controversial solution to the U.S. government: Task Force X, a response team composed entirely of criminals and supervillains currently imprisoned for their past offenses.

Waller’s plan involves using these dangerous individuals as expendable assets against threats too powerful for normal military intervention. To ensure compliance and prevent escape, each team member will have a nanite bomb surgically implanted in their neck. These devices can be remotely detonated if any team member attempts to rebel or flee, guaranteeing Waller’s absolute control over the squad. In exchange for their service, the criminals will receive reduced prison sentences. The government approves this morally questionable program.

Waller demonstrates her control capabilities through Dr. June Moone, an American archaeologist who became possessed by an ancient witch known as Enchantress during an expedition. The possession is not voluntary—Enchantress inhabits Moone’s body and can manifest whenever she chooses. However, Waller maintains control over Enchantress by possessing her magical heart, a physical object that exists separately from the witch’s body. When the heart is struck or damaged, Enchantress experiences corresponding pain and injury, making the heart an effective leash.

Colonel Rick Flag serves as Waller’s subordinate and is designated as a lead member of Task Force X. His military experience and tactical knowledge make him suitable for field command. However, Flag carries a significant personal complication: he is romantically involved with June Moone, having fallen in love with her despite—or perhaps because of—her unfortunate supernatural affliction.

Betrayal and Crisis

Enchantress proves less controllable than Waller anticipated. The witch betrays her handler, using her magical powers to conquer Midway City. She transforms ordinary humans into monstrous creatures under her command and summons her brother Incubus, an equally powerful supernatural entity. Together, the siblings plan to destroy mankind and reshape the world according to their ancient designs.

The crisis Enchantress creates provides Task Force X with its first mission: stop the rogue witch and save Midway City. Waller assembles the team from inmates at Belle Reve penitentiary, selecting six criminals with unique skills and abilities.

The roster includes Deadshot, a professional hitman with extraordinary marksmanship and a personal motivation—he wants to reunite with his young daughter Zoe and prove he can be something more than a killer. Harley Quinn joins the team, a former psychiatrist who suffered a psychotic break and became the volatile, crazed girlfriend of Gotham’s notorious crime lord, the Joker. Captain Boomerang, an Australian thief who specializes in weaponized boomerangs, brings both combat skills and deep cynicism. El Diablo, a former gangster with pyrokinetic abilities, carries immense guilt over his past. Killer Croc, a mutant with reptilian features and cannibalistic tendencies, provides raw physical power. Finally, Slipknot, a mercenary skilled at rope-climbing and assassination, rounds out the initial team.

Colonel Flag leads the squad in the field, accompanied by Katana, a Japanese swordswoman who serves as his associate and bodyguard. Katana’s sword is mystical, trapping the souls of those it kills. Waller and Flag deliberately conceal Flag’s romantic relationship with June Moone from the team members, recognizing that this personal connection could compromise his judgment or be exploited by the criminals.

Into Midway City

The squad is transported to Midway City via helicopter, but their arrival does not go smoothly. Enchantress’s forces shoot down the aircraft, forcing the team to continue on foot through hostile territory. Almost immediately, internal tensions surface.

Captain Boomerang approaches Slipknot and suggests that the nanite bombs are merely psychological tools—a bluff designed to ensure compliance without actual deadly capability. He convinces Slipknot to test this theory by attempting to escape. The moment Slipknot tries to flee, Flag activates his bomb remotely. Slipknot’s head explodes, killing him instantly and demonstrating the very real lethality of the explosives. Boomerang’s manipulation served to satisfy his own curiosity about whether the bombs were genuine, using Slipknot as an expendable test subject.

Now understanding that their bombs are real and that Flag will not hesitate to use them, the remaining squad members proceed with their mission. They scale a skyscraper while fighting through waves of heavily mutated soldiers that Enchantress has created and placed under her control. The combat is brutal and chaotic, testing each member’s unique abilities.

When they finally reach their objective location, the team discovers an unexpected truth: their mission target is Amanda Waller herself. She has been trapped in Midway City since Enchantress’s takeover and requires extraction. The revelation that they risked their lives to rescue their handler rather than complete some grander objective breeds resentment among the squad members.

The Joker’s Intervention

As Waller and the squad wait for helicopter extraction from the building’s roof, they are attacked by an unexpected party. The Joker has learned about Harley Quinn’s forced recruitment into Task Force X and has come to retrieve her. Using advanced technology stolen from an A.R.G.U.S. laboratory, Joker disables the nanite bomb in Harley’s neck, freeing her from Waller’s control.

Joker helps Harley escape via his helicopter, removing her from the squad. However, Waller responds by ordering military forces to shoot down Joker’s helicopter. The aircraft is hit and crashes, apparently killing Joker. Harley survives the crash and, believing Joker is dead, rejoins the squad. Her return is motivated partly by having nowhere else to go and partly by genuine grief over her lover’s apparent death.

Enchantress makes her next move by capturing Amanda Waller, intending to use her as a hostage to force the return of her magical heart. With Waller in Enchantress’s possession, the team’s chain of command becomes unclear.

During this chaos, Deadshot discovers Waller’s top-secret files, which contain classified information about each squad member and their handlers. Through these files, he learns about Flag’s romantic relationship with June Moone, understanding for the first time why Flag seems personally invested in stopping Enchantress beyond simple duty.

Abandonment and Revelation

The revelation about Flag’s hidden relationship causes the squad members to lose faith in their mission and their leader. They abandon Flag, retreating to an abandoned bar where they share drinks and, for the first time, speak honestly with each other about their lives and regrets.

El Diablo, who has been reluctant to use his pyrokinetic powers throughout the mission, finally opens up about his past. He reveals that his criminal lifestyle and inability to control his fire abilities led directly to the deaths of his wife and children. The confession is painful and raw, explaining why El Diablo has been holding back during combat—he fears the destructive potential of his own powers and what they have already cost him.

Flag enters the bar and relieves the squad of their mission obligations, acknowledging that forcing criminals to risk their lives for a cause they do not believe in is both futile and unjust. He releases them from duty, effectively ending Task Force X’s first operation in failure.

However, the conversation in the bar has changed something among the group. Despite their criminal backgrounds and selfish motivations, they recognize an opportunity to prove themselves as something more than villains and victims. They choose to continue the mission voluntarily, deciding to save Midway City not because Waller commands it or because their bombs compel them, but because they want to demonstrate their worth.

Final Battle

The squad launches an attack on Enchantress’s position, engaging her in direct combat. Simultaneously, Killer Croc and a platoon of Navy SEALs led by Flag execute a parallel mission: planting explosives beneath the subway system directly under where Incubus has positioned himself.

El Diablo makes a crucial decision to fully embrace his pyrokinetic abilities despite his fear and guilt. He unleashes his full power, transforming into a massive flaming entity capable of physically grappling with Incubus. El Diablo’s task is to keep Incubus positioned over the bomb placement long enough for the explosives to detonate. He succeeds but sacrifices himself in the process, dying when the bomb detonates and destroys Incubus.

With her brother dead, Enchantress makes a final attempt to divide her enemies. She invites the remaining squad members to join her cause, offering them power and freedom from human laws and limitations. Harley Quinn pretends to be tempted by the offer, approaching Enchantress as though she will accept the witch’s proposal. When she gets close enough, Harley uses the opportunity to cut out Enchantress’s magical heart, the physical source of her power and the object Waller used to control her.

Flag takes the heart from Harley and crushes it, destroying the magical organ. The destruction of her heart kills Enchantress, ending her supernatural existence. With the witch dead, June Moone is released from possession, returning to her normal human state and reuniting with Flag.

Consequences and Rewards

Amanda Waller survives the Midway City incident and resumes control of Task Force X. She honors her commitment to the squad members by deducting ten years from each member’s prison sentence. Additionally, she grants personal requests that each member made before the mission—Deadshot receives supervised visits with his daughter, Harley gets access to an espresso machine, and Killer Croc receives television privileges.

Captain Boomerang, however, receives no rewards and is simply returned to detention, presumably because his contribution to the mission was minimal and his manipulation of Slipknot demonstrated his untrustworthiness.

The Joker’s apparent death proves to be exaggerated. He survived the helicopter crash and subsequently breaks into Belle Reve penitentiary, fighting through security to reach Harley Quinn’s cell. He rescues her from imprisonment, and the two escape together, reunited once again.

Government Connections

In a meeting following the Midway City incident, Amanda Waller sits down with Bruce Wayne, the billionaire philanthropist secretly operating as Batman. They negotiate an arrangement: Wayne will use his influence and resources to protect Waller from legal consequences arising from the Task Force X program and the disaster in Midway City. In exchange, Waller provides Wayne with classified government files on the growing metahuman community.

Wayne reveals his plans to contact the heroes documented in these files, including the Flash and Aquaman, with the intention of building his own superhero team. This formation will eventually become the Justice League.

Waller demonstrates her own intelligence capabilities by advising Wayne to stop working late nights, implying she knows his secret identity as Batman. Wayne responds with a warning: Waller should shut down Task Force X voluntarily, or he and his “friends”—the heroes he plans to recruit—will shut it down for her by force.
